Chinese Researchers Publish a 50-Gb/s PAM4 Silicon Photonic Transmitter and CDR Designed with XMODEL

Scientific Analog, Inc. is pleased to announce that a group of Chinese researchers affiliated with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, Fudan University, Peking University, and PhotonIC Technologies, Inc. published a research article titled, "a 50-Gb/s PAM4 Si-Photonic Transmitter With Digital-Assisted Distributed Driver and Integrated CDR in 40-nm CMOS" in the early access issue of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. The article showcases a silicon photonic transmitter that sends a 50-Gb/s, 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) optical data stream via a hybrid-integrated Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and a reference-less clock-and-data recovery (CDR) that demodulates the PAM4 stream into a pair of 25-Gb/s NRZ streams. The article acknowledges Scientific Analog, Inc. for providing XMODEL, which was instrumental in exploring the initial architecture, verifying the functionality, and estimating the performance metrics of the presented, state-of-the-art optical I/O system.

"Kudos should go to the team who successfully built such a high-performance I/O system integrating electronics and optics after long years of collaboration. I am glad that XMODEL could be of help," said Jaeha Kim, CEO and founder of Scientific Analog.

Scientific Analog, Inc. is a leading developer and provider of a mixed-signal simulator in SystemVerilog (XMODEL), automatic model generator (MODELZEN), and schematic-based design environment (GLISTER). The IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal on new developments and research in solid-state circuits, published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in New York City. It is one of the most reputed journals in electronics and is currently the highest cited journal in the field of computer hardware design and widely considered to be the leading academic journal for publishing new developments related to integrated circuits.
